We Have a New Logo!

Photography Bay Logo

Just wanted to drop a line for folks who read updates via RSS, Facebook and such that we have a new logo. I appreciate the feedback we received from those who participated in the poll as we were working through designs. You guys definitely had a big hand in what we went with as the final design choice.

I’m very happy with the final result and I’m also sorry that everyone had to put up with that ugly red logo for so many years! Thanks for sticking around despite that design. ;)

I am still in the processing of making universal changes for everything our branding touches, but I just wanted to put this post out there so folks who don’t necessarily come to the site everyday would have a heads up on the new logo and colors.

Photography Bay is Now Optimized for Mobile Users

iPad Post

A couple of months or so back, I made a pretty big change for mobile users after some feedback from those of you on iPhones and iPads.  After listening to feedback, tweaking a few items and watching the usage numbers go up, I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that Photography Bay is much easier to consume on your Apple iOS or Android device now. Photography Bay Forum, Registration and Spam

Earlier in the year, Photography Bay launched a free forum for its readers.  Unfortunately, it has been a target for spammers who register fake profiles and try to trade off Photography Bay’s traffic in order to get links and traffic to their shady operations.

As a result, I decided to manually review and approve all registrations and have been backlogged with hundreds of spam profiles to review, in addition to the many legitimate registrations.

I have gotten emails from some of you asking what is taking so long for your profile to be approved.  The easiest way to get your registration approved is to send me an email at:  contact@photographybay.com and let me know you’re waiting.

I will respond to these registration emails immediately.

I have also included these notes on the forum in an easy-to-find location for future registrants.

Finally, if anyone has suggestions on better ways to cut down on forum spam, I’m all ears.  Feel free to email me at the above address or send a message via the contact form.

Site Update

Photography Bay is now on its new server, which will hopefully lead to better stability and faster load times.

We lost some comments from today and last night, but shouldn’t have a problem going forward.  Sorry to those of you whose comments ended up in the cybertrash somewhere.

We’re still chasing some gremlins, and will be making some cosmetic updates over the next day or two.  If you see anything that looks way out of place for too long, let me know via a comment or the contact form.

Have a happy and safe New Year!

Call for Guest Bloggers

So, I may be out of pocket a bit within the next week or so.  We’ve got a new addition to our family on the way, and while I’m trying to work on some good content to go up while I’m learning to change diapers again, I thought I would open up Photography Bay to other photographers (amateur or pro) to share their thoughts with the rest of the Photography Bay community.

If you have something worthwhile to say that generally relates to photography, whether it be cameras, lenses, techniques, tips, business, etc., I’d be happy to consider your guest post.  It can be something as simple as how you shot a particular image, or something a little deeper, like how other art forms relate to a specific photographic technique.

Send your ideas via the Contact Form, and I’ll let you know if it will work.

The last time I did this, it turned into a win-win-win for everyone involved.  The guest authors really enjoyed the boost in traffic, it started some great discussions among regular readers and the authors, and gave me something to share with you guys while I was off doing other things.

The posts will likely run between Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 13.

For every guest post, I’ll include a short bio with a couple of links back to your site or work elsewhere on the web.

Past guest contributors include Rich Legg, Zach Matthews, Angela Datre, Ron Kruger and many others.  You can hit those links for an idea of the bio, links and general topic ideas.

Again, you can submit your post ideas or any questions through the Contact Form.

Comments Are Back

Sorry for the interruption on those of you who have been trying to comment over the past couple days.  Had a bit of a database hiccup, which is now fixed.  So feel free to leave your questions, comments and derogatory remarks in the comment fields of the posts again!

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Announcing the Photography Bay Forum

Last week, Photography Bay saw a site redesign.  Along with that design, as some of you have noticed, Photography Bay also gained a dedicated forum for Photography Bay readers and anyone else wishing to participate.

The forums are located at www.photographybay.com/forum.

I’ve been testing it for about a week with a handful of Photography Bay readers (Thanks guys!) and I think/hope that it’s ready for prime time.

Read on for further details and find out how you can score some free swag. [Read more...]

Site Update

Photography Bay just refreshed its design in favor of what I think is a cleaner and better design.  If you’re reading this post by RSS or email delivery, click on through and see what it looks like.

We’re still working out all the gremlins of the code, so please let us know in the comments below of anything that looks out of place or broken.  I don’t think there’s anything major still around, but I’ve already noticed a couple minor issues, and if it appears to be too difficult to modify on the site live, we may go back to the previous design for a bit until we get things sorted out.

[Update: If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, there are a number of bugs that you will encounter and this site cannot be used to its full capabilities.  I am trying to fix some of these bugs, but I doubt that I'll get to all of them. IE 6 was introduced in 2001 - it's really time for a new browser.

At the very least, I recommend that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.  If you are interested in the best web browsing experience, I recommend going with Firefox.  You can view the download links and learn more about better browsing options at SaveTheDevelopers.org. ]

[Update #2: We are experiencing some problems with comments generally and instances where comments are being directed to the wrong posts.  We are working on a solution. Fixed.]

Additionally, I’d be interested to hear what you think about the new design.  Drop your comments and derogatory remarks in the comments.

Finally, I thought I’d let you know that a new feature is coming the Photography Bay soon (hopefully in the next day or two), so stay tuned.
