It looks like tha Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens that was announced outside the US last month will also be coming to the US. Canon USA has the lens listed on its site.
The lens was previously slated to be available in the UK this month. No word yet on pricing; however, the existing version of this lens runs around $180 street at the time of this post. Check availability for the new lens on Amazon.com.

Does anyone know what this latest variant brings to the table over the old version? I have the last version on my keep-it-in-the-car Rebel XTi (never miss a shot, right?!) and like it very much considering its price.

I appreciate an inexpensive lens as much as the next photographer. I received an 18-135mm f/3.5 – 5.6 kit lens with my purchase. But in my experience, even with much improved performance at higher ISOs, you really need great light to make these lenses worth the effort.
I just made the investment in a 50mm f/1.4 until I can make the jump to an L series, such as the 24-70mm f/2.8.
55-250mm does give someone a tremendous range to play with however, and even more so on the crop cameras.

I’m a big fan of the 50mm f/1.4 as well.
