Sony and the University of Alabama are working on a gigapixel resolution camera for improved satellite surveillance. It can see 10-km-square from an altitude of 7.5 kilometres with a resolution better than 50 centimetres per pixel. As well as removing annoying artefacts created by tiling images in Google Earth and similar, it should allow CCTV surveillance of entire cities with one camera. It does it with an array of chips that record small parts of the image and place them at the focal plane of a large multiple-lens system. Wonder how long I have to wait to get that in DSLR form?

PhotoReview has posted a full review of the Sony ?700:
Despite taking a while to produce this camera, in the DSLR-A700 Sony has delivered a camera that enthusiasts can enjoy with features that will be of value to many professional photographers. A nice step up from the A100, it goes head-to-head against Canon’s recently-released EOS 40D and Nikon’s D300, which is expected in November.

Amazon just put up their Sony ?700 pages and the camera is now available for pre-order. Amazon has a first-come, first-served policy with pre-orders, so if you’re planning on getting one, you’d better get in line now.
The ?700 (body only) is initially showing out of stock with no pre-order option. Both kits show availability of December 15, 2007; however, Sony has already said the a700 body only and 18-70 kit would ship in October, while the 16-105 kit will ship in November. I imagine that Amazon is being rather conservative with availability dates as they were with the Canon 40D.

Sony is expanding its a (Alpha) digital SLR system with the introduction of the DSLR-A700 camera, which is aimed at photo enthusiasts or serious photo hobbyists.
The new model features advanced imaging technologies and ultra-responsive operation, as well as a lightweight, dust- and moisture-resistant, magnesium alloy construction common to enthusiast-class D-SLR cameras. [Read more…]

It looks like Sony UK is in the process of turning on the Alpha 700 portion of its site. It’s been up and down for a few hours now.
Here’s what’s been gleaned form the the specs:
12.4 megapixel CMOS sensor backed by a BIONZ image processor, 3-inch, 921,000 pixel LCD, 3200 maximum ISO (with a ridiculous ISO 6400 “expanded mode”), 11 point autofocus, and wireless flash support.

More screen grabs:
Photoclub Alpha has a thorough post covering the leak. I imagine that we’ll get the official word from Sony tomorrow.
I’ll keep you posted on the latest developments. Stay tuned.

The buzz on the next offering from Sony is in full swing now. Check out this post on the upcoming announcement, which I think is in Korean. Based on what I can translate with a little help from Google, it says the key features include:
Announcement should be very soon. There’s plenty of buzz that Sony will announce on September 5th or 6th (apparently, at a press conference in the UK). The Korean site linked above mentions a availability date in November – not unlike the Nikon D300.

Photoclub Alpha reports:
INSIDE sources – mainly people who have been invited to press launch events – confirm that Sony is to show its new Advanced Amateur camera, thought to be called the Alpha 300, on Tuesday September 4th. A press conference is being held in Italy, and journalists from European mainland countries have been invited to attend. As yet, I am unaware of any British journalists attending, and have not received an invitation myself.
. . . .
It is almost certainly APS-C format, 12.x megapixels CMOS, 5.5 frames per second, ISO to 3200, improved AF, 3 inch screen or very much improved 2.5 inch, 95 per cent view 90 per cent scale (or vice-versa) optical glass prism viewfinder, AF assist on the body, improved flash, same basic shutter speed range as A100, slightly altered mirror/shutter action, very fast card writing, some water and weatherproofing upgrades, generally better response, altered user interface; much better high ISO noise, further enhancements to SSS. . . .
