Lighting for Digtal Photography

Lighting for Digital Photography is Syl Arena’s next book, which is due out at the end of October.  Syl wrote the excellent Speedliter’s Handbook on Canon Speedlites last year and I expect him to nail this one as well.  (You can read my review of Speedliter’s Handbook here.)

Lighting for Digital Photography will go beyond just the Canon Speedlite system and also dig into lighting with Nikon speedlights, bigger strobes and continuous lights.  Additionally, the book will cover use of light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, flags and gels.

Syl is a great teacher and Speedliter’s Handbook proved he knows how to teach in written words in addition to the workshops he’s known for.

Lighting for Digital Photography is currently available to pre-order for $14 on Amazon.com.  This book would make a great stocking stuffer this holiday season for the photographer in your life.

Canon Speedlite

Syl Arena recently put on a Speedliting class at B&H Photo‘s event space.  The very cool folks at B&H have made the entire 1 hour 43 minute presentation available to watch online for free.  Check it out below. [click to continue…]

Have you ever looked at those buttons on the back of your flash and wondered what exactly that they do?  What about understanding flash exposure compensation?  Or, high speed sync?  Want to dim the sun?

The Speedliter’s Handbook is a killer resource from Syl Arena that is primarily for Canon DSLR shooters who want to integrate Canon Speedlites into their repertoire.  That said, photographers using any other brand of gear will get their money’s worth out of this book. [click to continue…]

I just got a tip that the Syl Arena’s Speedliter’s Handbook is now shipping from Amazon.

If you aren’t familiar with it, this book is all about learning to shoot with Canon’s E-TTL flash system.  In Syl’s words, “It’s almost 400 pages, includes 800 photos, 100 diagrams, and 39 shoots detailed on 2-page spreads. If you shoot small flash (any brand), then 70% will be of interest. If you shoot Canon Speedlites, then 110% of the book will be of interest.”

The Speedliter’s Handbook retails for $49.99, but it’s currently up for grabs on Amazon for $31.49.

The Speedliter’s Handbook is a new book from Canon Speedlite specialist, Syl Arena.

The book has been in the works for nearly a year now, and just went to the printer last week.  But it turned out to be much bigger than planned…

“It’s almost 400 pages, includes 800 photos, 100 diagrams, and 39 shoots detailed on 2-page spreads. If you shoot small flash (any brand), then 70% will be of interest. If you shoot Canon Speedlites, then 110% of the book will be of interest.” -Syl Arena

Speedliter’s Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites carries a retail price of $49.99; however, it is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com at $31.49 and will ship just after Christmas.

As you may have heard by now, Photoshop World 2010 in Orlando was stellar. While Photoshop World leans very heavy toward post-processing and all the goodness that Photoshop lets us do, there is also a healthy serving of photography mixed in. Lighting, in particular, was a huge theme in this year’s photography sessions.  If you are passionate about photography (or post-processing) and have never been to a Photoshop World, you owe it to yourself to attend one soon.

Unfortunately, I cannot convey in words just how much fun Scott Kelby and the rest of the NAPP gang manage to stuff into a few days.  Instead, I’ll just share the 10 (totally subjective) best things about Photoshop World 2010 and leave it to you to make it to the next one and experience it for yourself.
