The Canon EOS M had all the potential in the world to be a market leader; however, Canon utterly failed in producing a competent AF system. Accordingly, the EOS M has been highly criticized for its sluggish performance and sales appear to have been equally sluggish.
While Canon has blamed the poor lens selection for the EOS M’s failure to fly off store shelves, the rest of the photographic community knows that it’s the slow AF system that keeps people from buying in. I love the EF-M 22mm f/2 lens that Canon includes as a kit lens for the EOS M – it’s compact, a great focal length as a walkaround lens and it has a nice, fast aperture. But, again, the AF speed is unacceptable.
When Canon announced the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens earlier this month, the company also revealed that a firmware update would be forthcoming for the EOS M and will improve the system’s AF performance. Now, it appears we have video proof of just what firmware version 2.0.2 for the EOS M will do. [click to continue…]
Canon has released a new lens for the EOS M system. The Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens becomes the third lens in the EF-M series – accompanied by the 18-55mm standard zoom and 22mm f/2 lenses that were released alongside the original EOS M camera last summer (read our Canon EOS M review).
On the APS-C sensor of the EOS M, the new 11-22mm lens provides the full frame equivalent coverage of roughly 18-35mm. Of course, as you can tell from the lens name acronyms, it features built-in image stabilization (Canon cites 3-stop shutter speed advantage) and the new STM motor for quite operation during video capture.
The EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens has a .15m minimum focus distance and features a retractable lens design, along with a manual focus ring.
No word yet on price or availability.

The Canon EOS M has dropped in price down to $499 (was $599). This kit includes the 22mm f/2 kit lens. Check it out at B&H Photo and Amazon.com.
It appears that the upcoming EOS-b, Canon EOS 100D (or whatever it will be called) specs have leaked out via Best Buy’s website. These appear to be legit – although the official camera name may not be listed yet and you can expect this to be pulled soon…
Previous indications of a “smaller DSLR” appear to be legit with the camer weighing a full 5 ounces less than the Canon Rebel T4i and measures 3.6″ (height) x 4.6″ (width) x 2.7″ (depth).
The new EOS model should carry a retail price of $799 with a EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens, which further confirms the EF-S mount and that this is NOT the follow-up to the EOS M. [click to continue…]
