Has anybody had experience with both the Nikon 70-200MM f2.8 and the Sigma 70-200 f2.8?
I am considering one or the other. The cost is double for the Nikon as well as the size. Is this a case of you get what you pay for or is is brandname pricing?
    Thanks
    John

I've never used either lens but I will suggest that if you can get to a camera store(s) that have them both and test them on your current camera and gauge the results. The Nikon lens is suppose to be faster, but the model camera you have would also determine how fast the lens responds.

Digital Photography Review has a comparison of the two lens as well as the Tamron and Canon one here: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_70-200_2p8_n15/page2.asp

At the end of the day it will most likely come down to your budget and which lens feels more comfortable. Personally I don't skimp when it comes to camera lens. If anything you should spend more on your various lens than on your camera. Why? Camera technology is constantly changing so what was good three maybe four years ago is just decent today. But when you can take prime Nikon lens that is fifty years old and put it on any new Nikon camera today and get fantastic results you know that the glass is worth the investment.

You didn't ask about this, but I just went through the same search as you are currently doing - I looked long and hard and visited several camera stores and even to a professional photographer that I knew - he suggested (and uses) a Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens with Built in Motor for Nikon DSLR Cameras for my Nikon D5000 with 2 of Nikon's finest lenses that give me from 24 to 200 mm..I have 2 kit lens that I bought with my camera (a 28mm to 50mm and a 50mm to 200mm). I was looking for a single lens that would cover what these 2 Nikon lenses do. Also... the larger of the 2 Nikon lenses is just that... LARGE. I am an avid do everything photographer and found the Tamron lens to be great for my purposes, and gives me the added range of 18 to 270 mm w/o changing the lens.. All 3 lenses are Image Stabilizing. I took photo's with all 3 lenses and the Tamron held it's own when compared to the Nikon's... I won't sell my Nikon's, but the Tamron is the lens that is attached to my Nikon D5000 for everyday photo's.

Thanks Don. That is a DX lens and ny Nikon D700 is FX - I do use a Tamron 28-300mm for everyday work - I find it a bit soft on the high side.

John, I use the Nikon lens. To some extent, I just wanted it because of the VR advantage, because it's FX and the good reviews it gets for its glass, superb internal focusing capability & overall design. Really, it's not a decision made primarily on image quality. The Nikon lens oozes of quality and purpose of design (although I wish it had a shorter minimum focusing point). It feels more comfortable for me and I'm a sucker for the real stuff. As Grundy says, I don't skimp when it comes to camera lens either.

John.. I have used both. The only reason I got rid of the Sigma was I needed the ED full frame Nikon. Both worked great. Unless you work for sports Ilustrated Sigma should be fine.

obviously, Nikon has a slight edge in PQ and AF speed, but i am happy with my Sigma, and have adapted my style to its short comings
