Having wished for years that Nikon would do exactly this, I sincerely hope that they follow through with the Patent and produce such a device. There are likely hundreds of thousands of Nikon film camera owners out there in all parts of the World who would jump on the opportunity to use their cameras as DSLR units. I would, for one, resurrect my lovely F3HP and put it immediately back into use as would, I am sure, the owners of more recently produced Nikon professional film cameras. There is just plain no argument I can think of against this idea, except, of course, the hit the sales of regular DSLR cameras might take. I personally know several photographers locally who have good functioning Nikon Pro film cameras sitting in closets gathering dust that would be put to good use once more by means of this new camera back. What a coup it would be for Nikon to follow through with it. Go Nikon!!!!

Nikon has filed a patent that makes way for a digital back to convert 35mm film SLRs into the full-fledged DSLRs. The rear door that covers the film holder would be removed and replaced with a digital back equipped with an image sensor.

An excerpt from the patent:
