I would take a guess @ it being D4s @ 24MP. Reason for that is 24MP seems to be a sweet spot as the D800 seems to get lots of negative press in regards to this high pixel density and how more difficult it is for getting sharp shots (not speaking from experience … just repeating what I've heard online from reviewers and photo podcasts). But @ 24MP, people seem to be finding it to be a great rez. Also, @ 24MP, they could keep the FPS up quite high to be competitive with Canon top model.
This is a confused set of rumours.
A D4x @ 36mp would be a lead balloon unless it has the D4's speed and frame rate. But wouldn't that be the D5?
We are more likely to see Obama returned for a third term than a D400/D500/D9000 or whatever the high end DX won't be called. We might want it, but it's a religous conviction at Nikon that there simply won't be one.
