Ahead of Photokina 2014, Canon has announced three new lenses – the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM, EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM.
The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens weighs in a 4.6 lbs, which is roughly half the weight of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM. It features newly developed gapless dual-layered diffractive optical (DO) elements that help improve optical performance while maintaining virtually the same size and weight as its predecessor.
Additionally, the DO element in the new 400mm lens is optimally positioned deeper within the optical formula than in the original EF 400mm DO lens to help reduce flare around backlit subjects.
There are three Image Stabilization modes in the new lens that proved up to four shutter speed stops of correction. The modes include standard, panning and during exposure only.
There are four customizable buttons on the front of the lens. Full-time manual focus is also available at any point. There is also a Power Focus mode that allows for smooth focus pulls for HDSLR use while shooting video.
The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens should be available in November for $6899. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens serves as a more affordable option to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM (when comparing retail prices, at least). The new 24-105mm lens is the first full frame zoom lens with the STM stepping motor, which is more accommodating to shooting video with its silent drive AF motor.
The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens retails for $599.99 and should be available in December. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
Finally, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens carries the badge as the slimmest and lightest EF-S lens ever produced. The field of view is equivalent to roughly a 38mm lens on a full frame camera. Unfortunately, many Canon shooters were hoping for another affordable pancake prime in the EF line to match the popular EF 40mm f/2.8 STM; however, this lens is made for Canon crop sensor cameras only.
The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens retails for a very reasonable $149.99 and should be available in November. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
