The Fuji X-T2 hasn’t been announced yet as the obvious successor to the X-T1. However, someone got their hands on a prototype X-T2 and listed it on ebay with a Fuji XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS lens. [Read more…]
We’re back on the waiting game for more info on the upcoming Canon 5D Mark IV. Everyone seems to be feeling good that the 5D Mark IV will be announced in time for Photokina 2016.
Rumors of the Canon 5D Mark IV continue to trickle in. The latest word comes from Canon Rumors, which believes Canon will launch the 5D Mark IV in the August/September time frame ahead of Photokina (in late September).
There are really no reliable specs for the camera at this point. Previous rumors have suggested everything from 28MP to 4K video to CFast card slots. None of those specs are either confirmed or ruled out at this point.
NAB is just about 10 days away, so the rumor mill may pick up a bit over the next couple weeks leading up to whatever Canon’s news is for NAB.
Several companies have released affordable super-telephoto zoom lenses recently (like the Nikon 200-500mm, Sigma 150-600mm & Tamron 150-600mm) and it looks like Canon may be adding to the mix. Canon Rumors reports that it has info from a reliable source of a Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS lens in development.
The lens may not be an “L” lens and, thus, wouldn’t necessarily compete with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens. Accordingly, the lens is also expected to be offered at a lower price point than the 100-400mm.
No additional rumors on pricing or release dates; however, the 200-600mm lens is expected sometime this year.
Canon Rumors received a tip that a new 50mm lens is coming soon. While there are no specifics as to whether it is a replacement for the current 50mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.2 lens, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is over 30 years old and is ripe for replacement.
Canon Rumors rates this as a credible rumor and it’s certainly a needed replacement. So, hopefully, we’ll see something sooner rather than later.
A recently-published patent filing reveals a Canon 28mm f/1.4 lens possibly in the works. There is no 28mm fast L lens in Canon’s line-up so that would be a nice addition to the line to slot in between the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM and the EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lenses.
Of course, a patent filing doesn’t necessarily mean a lens is imminent but these filings have been a pretty good barometer for lenses in the past. Note that this patent was filed in 2014 and just published this month.

We are in pre-NAB territory now, so expect the video-centric rumors to pick up in the days ahead. As video and DSLRs go, there is nothing quite as juicy as a good Canon 5D-series rumor.
[Update: This lens is now official and is available for pre-order.]
As my wife and I were watching The People v. OJ Simpson a couple nights ago, we talked about how television programming has reached a renaissance era. The best programming ever is available today. And it’s because we have alternative platforms driving incredible content. Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu and other platforms are forcing traditional cable to push the boundaries of the limited quality we’ve seen over the last three decades.
In a very similar vein, Sigma and other third-party lens manufacturers are holding the traditional guards’ feet to the fire with amazing new lenses. It’s like we’re hitting a lens renaissance now that the digital era is maturing and the market is moving up stream to the enthusiast and pro niches. And now that next crazy lens is almost here… [Read more…]
