The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is an easy-to-use standard zoom lens that can cover a large zoom area ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm portrait-length telephoto, and its Image Stabilizer Technology steadies camera shake up to three stops. Constructed with one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses, this lens minimizes chromatic aberration and distortion. The result is excellent picture quality, even at wide apertures. Canon’s ring-type USM gives silent but quick AF, along with full-time manual focus. Moreover, with dust- and moisture-resistant construction, this is a durable yet sophisticated lens that meets the demands of advanced amateur photographers and professional photographers alike. Canon 1Ds Mark III Review at PopPhoto
PopPhoto has posted a camera test of the 21.1 megapixel Canon 1Ds Mark III.
Color accuracy on the 1Ds Mark III also lands in the top tier, with an Excellent rating based on an average Delta E of 6.98 (compared with 7.3 on the 1D Mark III and 7.28 on the Nikon D3, also Excellent ratings.) The color accuracy remained similarly high all the way up through ISO 1600, while resolution dropped only 15 percent when we applied full noise reduction at ISO 1600 and 3200 in Canon’s sophisticated (and included) Digital Photo Professional software. Canon’s Iris Registration Mode – Biological Copyright Metadata
Canon is using Iris watermarking to take photographer’s copyright protection to the next level.
. . . to provide an imaging apparatus that makes it possible to protect the copyright of photographic images by reliably acquiring biological information of a photographer . . . – US Patent Application No. 2008/0025574
Stories like the recent discovery of Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir’s stolen Flickr images that surfaced on iStockphoto make all photographers cringe. Many photographers go to great lengths to protect their images. Past attempted solutions include watermarks on the front of images. I can recall this practice from my childhood years with the Olan Mills studio gold embossing in the bottom corner.
More recently, in the digital age of photography, watermarking in Photoshop or other image editing software. While visible watermarks are common among a variety of photographers, invisible watermarks (“electronic or digital watermarks“), which are embedded in the image file, are somewhat less prevalent – but gaining ground and acceptance among photographers. Companies like Digimarc are pressing the digital watermark cause to protect photographer’s and other author’s data.
Camera companies are pushing forward as well. Stories like that of Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir help increase the desirability and demand for practical copyright solutions in modern digital photography. [Read more…]
Canon USA informing VIPs of new EOS-1D Mark III AF fix
Per RobGalbraith.com:
Starting on February 1, 2008, Canon USA began informing key photographers and key organizations using the EOS-1D Mark III that engineers at Canon in Japan have developed a new fix for the camera’s autofocus, a fix that’s in addition to the change in the sub-mirror mechanism and firmware updates introduced in 2007. (Continue reading. . .)
Here’s Photography Bay’s original post for some background on the EOS-1D Mark III AF issue. If you’ve got some time to kill, there’s a ton of information on the issue at RobGalbraith.com.

Canon 5D Mark II Rumblings from PMA
No, it’s not been announced. However, Gizmodo caught up with a Canon rep at PMA and had the following to say regarding the 5D:
Interesting bit just tossed our way by the Canon rep when we asked about a 5D follow-up, slightly paraphrased: The EOS-1Ds line (their full-frame pro DSLRs) is on a three-year upgrade cycle. The 1Ds Mark II came out in 2004, and the Mark III dropped in 2007. The EOS 5D came out in 2005.
Right, it’s cryptic and all, but that’s got use thinking Photokina, eh? The 5D arrived in August ’05, so we should be looking toward August ’08 on the 3-year upgrade cycle? Nice catch Giz.

Canon 7D
UPDATE: The Canon 7D has been officially announced. Read more on Photography Bay’s Canon 7D Reviews and Resources. Check availability at Amazon.com.
Like the Canon 3D, the Canon 7D is a fictional camera that has been stirring in the rumor mill for some time now. In the months leading up to PMA 2008, the rumor mill has kicked it up a notch with speculations of the introduction of a lower-end 5D camera – the 7D. The Canon EOS 7 and 7n were part of 35mm Elan series that’s been around since 1991. The 7-series camera were the prosumer SLRs of the 35mm film era, which I would classify in or around the same slot as the 20D-40D series cameras in the DSLR realm. One of the cool features of the 7e and 7ne was an eye-controlled focus option. “The Eye Controlled Focus System tracks the glance of the eye, integrating composition and focus into one uninterrupted step. Canon’s fastest Eye Control system to date, it works whether the camera is oriented horizontally or vertically.” (Canon)
Like all of the other unannounced cameras that you see on Photography Bay, these are just rumors and speculations of a Canon 7D. However, there’s been enough buzz on the fabled 7D to start consolidating these rumors and keeping tabs on the latest ones. For example, see this most recent post about a Canon DSLR that’s a step up from the 40D and a “direct hit” to Nikon’s D300.
As always, stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted on the latest and greatest rumors of the Canon 7D.

Canon EOS Surprise at PMA
Just when the Canon gearheads started to exhale over the Pre-PMA announcement of the Rebel XSi / 450D, word from someone “in the know” leaks info that Canon’s got a PMA surprise coming very soon.
It won’t be like a 5D replacement. Think of it more like a direct hit to D300. It’s just one step, not five, above 40D. (Via)
Could this be the fabled 7D, or perhaps a 40Dn? I expect something like the former rather than the latter if this rumor is legit.
Stay tuned for the latest.

Canon 3D
The clamor for a digital version of the popular Canon EOS 3 film camera has been around for quite a while. It has continued to grow over the past 2.5 years that the Canon 5D has been around. Leading up to PMA 2008, rumors of a 5D Mark II also brought more speculation of the fabled Canon 3D. I’m not saying that a 3D is coming at PMA or anytime for that matter. However, there have been enough rumors floating around that I’ve decided to set up a dedicated page to follow the Canon 3D.
For now, have a look at this recent rumor for the 15MP full frame 3D:
15.1 MP (full frame)
14 bit
1 Digic III
Iso 100 to 6400(up to 12800)
AF like 1Dmk III
3 fps
3 inch screen
A sort of smaller 1D body, with integrated grip but not rear lcd panel
1 slot flash card
Additionally, more recent rumors suggest a step up from the 40D (not quite 5D level specs) may appear at PMA. Whether this would be the 3D remains to be seen; however, based on Canon’s prior model history, the 3D should be reside in between the 5D and the 1-series. If this rumor is true, then it would more than likely be something more like the Canon 7D. (Read More)
