Canon has announced that is moving away from the mainstream “.com” top level domain (TLD) names and will begin using its new “.canon” proprietary TLD.
Canon says that visitors to .canon sites can now “easily confirm their authenticity.” Apparently, they couldn’t do so when visiting canon.com?
So far, Canon has launched the English-language version of global.canon domain under the new generic TLD. Canon says it will continue to roll out other domains in the future.
It’s great to see Canon jump on the bleeding edge of something for consumers. There really aren’t many companies pushing their gTLD branding yet. So, kudos to Canon for being an early adopter.
Now, let’s talk about mirrorless cameras and affordable 4K cameras…

It’s hard to knock Canon for pushing the bar on ANYTHING these days, but this is likely going to create confusion with the older generation of less tech-savvy folks. With all the phishing and scam websites out there, does the generation that finally is beginning to understand the difference between legitimate and scam websites need to “worry” about these types of domains now? Tech support this holiday season is going to be a blast.

I wonder how the various email programs will treat these new domain names, at least for a while? Will they possibly identify them as spam mailings or will they be well enough versed to treat them accordingly?
