Nikon Unveils New 24-70mm f/2.8 VR, 200-500mm VR and 24mm f/1.8 Lenses

Nikon just announced a trio of impressive lenses.

  • The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR standard zoom
  • The AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR super-telephoto zoom
  • The AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED wide-angle prime

Adding VR to the popular 24-70mm f/2.8 range lens wasn’t a question of if, but rather, when. Nikon follows Tamron’s third-party offering with its new AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens that offers up to four stops of image stabilization and is equipped with a Tripod Mode as well. The optical formula consists of 20 elements in 16 groups, along a 9-blade diaphragm and has a filter diameter of 82mm.

The Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens retails for $2399.95 and should be available later this month.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens features 4.5 stops of image stabilization and weighs just over 5 lbs with its tripod collar. It has a massive 95mm filter ring though. The new 200-500mm lens retails for $1399.95 and should be available mid-September.

Too bad CANON didn’t come out with a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS.

I still can’t understand why they made the 24-70mm f/4L IS. Everyone wanted the f/2.8, and they already have a mediocre f/4L lens in the 24-105mm.

Thanks for showing Canon how it’s done, Nikon.

What about the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM?

It does not have Image Stabilization (or VR, as Nikon calls it).
