Will Canon finally cross over into the reasonably-priced 4K market?
Maybe.
If recent rumors turn out to be true, we could see a $2500-ish Canon 4K camcorder in early 2015. The rumored camera is said to be direct competition to the Sony PXW-X70 camcorder.
Like the X70, Canon’s new 4K offering is also rumored to sport a 1″ CMOS sensor. We know Canon is working with 1″ sensors now that we’ve seen the PowerShot G7 X. What we don’t know is whether Canon will continue to source image sensors from Sony, as was the case for the 1″ sensor in the PowerShot G7 X.
The form factor for the upcoming 4K camera is expected to resemble the Canon EOS C100 but it should be smaller and closer in overall size to the Sony X70.
While there are new 4K products expected from Canon at NAB 2015, it’s possible that we could see this new 4K camera announced at or around CES 2015 next month.

I’m not holding my breath, or holding high hopes for this, but if it’s magically an F/2 or F/2.8 fixed lens with at least an 18-200 equivalent, then it might be worth taking a look at. The XA20’s are decent cameras in the “traditional” form factor for those pro all-in-one’s… more along those lines would be a better idea, but Canon doesn’t listen anyway. It’ll be comical if they outsource major parts on a new 4K release to Sony – almost as bad as Apple and Samsung’s relationship, but at least Apple has something to offer in that relationship…
