Canon has filed another patent application for a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens, which has become sort of a holy grail lens for Canon owners. The patent application was filed back in September 2012 but was just published last month.
If such a lens ever makes it into production, expect it to be heavy and expensive. The current EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens retails for $2300, although it is heralded as one of Canon’s best performers and is a solid step up from the prior version.
Optical specs from the patent provide the following:
- Zoom ratio 2.75
- Focal length f = 24.7-35.21-68mm
- Fno. 2.9
- Half angle ? = 41.21-31.57-17.65 °
- Image height 21.64mm
- 223.94-207.87-180.56mm overall length of the lens
- BF 38.31mm

Would this be a decent replacement for my 18-55 kit lens?
Jared says
Beyond decent! But it’s going to cost quite a bit more.
