Rumors have been stirring for a while on both the Nikon D4X and D400 – with Nikon D400 being one of the most buzz-worthy DSLRs in the rumor mill lately.
The most recent rumors suggest that we might see one or both of these cameras unveiled in January 2014.
First off, Nikon Rumors reports that NPS Japan has stopped selling Nikon D4 cameras through its equipment exchange program. Adding a little fuel to that fire, B&H Photo has the Nikon D4 listed as back-ordered.
Finally, the Dubai Photo Club has posted that Nikon is launching the D400 or D4X on January 17 in Dubai.
On Nikon Middle East & Africa’s Facebook page, Nikon posted the above image along with the following message:

Previously rumored specs for the Nikon D400 include more processing power to handle the high resolution files at a faster frame rate (something in which the D7100 lags behind). Additionally, the faster processor may lead to 60p video at higher resolutions. An improved AF system is also rumored for the D400. The D400 is also rumored to pack the same 24MP sensor as the D7100 with no AA filter to boot.
Nikon D4X Rumor Specs/Features
- Same body as the Nikon D4
- 36 MP sensor without AA filter, designed and made by Nikon, with some new improvements (moire in-camera reduction)
- 6 fps (11 fps is the maximum possible fps with the current shutter)
- Few video improvements
- Price should be few hundred dollars above the existing Nikon D4 (currently listed for $5996.95).
So, yeah, it looks like something is coming on January 17. There have been no leaks of a D4X or D400 yet. However, if one of those camera is coming next month, expect to see some more rumors and leaks trickle out over the next couple of weeks.

Hopefully nikon is not pilling the garbage they pulled a few years ago with their next big thing campaign that announced nothing.
Tami says
Okay……….36MP for more than double the price of the current D800. Why would one get all hot and bothered about a 36 MP D4X ? And pay 2+ times more money for it?
Harvey says
I believe the more general consensus is a D4s type upgrade in time for the winter Olympics.
Bengt Nyman says
I would buy a 36 MP Df with an improved grip and horizontal secondary dial before I buy a D4x.
Adam says
I would take a guess @ it being D4s @ 24MP. Reason for that is 24MP seems to be a sweet spot as the D800 seems to get lots of negative press in regards to this high pixel density and how more difficult it is for getting sharp shots (not speaking from experience … just repeating what I’ve heard online from reviewers and photo podcasts). But @ 24MP, people seem to be finding it to be a great rez. Also, @ 24MP, they could keep the FPS up quite high to be competitive with Canon top model.
Rune Reader says
This is a confused set of rumours.
A D4x @ 36mp would be a lead balloon unless it has the D4’s speed and frame rate. But wouldn’t that be the D5?
We are more likely to see Obama returned for a third term than a D400/D500/D9000 or whatever the high end DX won’t be called. We might want it, but it’s a religous conviction at Nikon that there simply won’t be one.
