Sony has finally taken the official wraps off what has been perhaps the worst-kept secret in recent camera launches – the QX100 and QX10 smartphone lenses.
As Sony describes it, “the new cameras utilize the latest version of Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile™ application (available for iOS™ and Android™ devices, version 3.1 or higher required) to connect wirelessly to a smartphone, converting the bright, large LCD screen of the phone into a real-time viewfinder with the ability to release the shutter, start/stop movie recordings, and adjust common photographic settings like shooting mode, zoom, Auto Focus area and more.”
The QX100 and QX10 can also be operated independently as standalone cameras. Both units are complete with a shutter release, memory card slot and a rechargeable battery.
The QX100 features a large 1-inch, 20.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor – the same one as found in the Sony RX100 II. Likewise, if features the same 3.6x optical zoom and HD video capture. The QX100 retails for $500 and should be available later this month. You can find the QX100 here at B&H Photo.
The QX10 features a smaller, compact-camera sensor weighing in at 18.2MP and a 10x zoom lens. The QX10 is much more compact than the QX100 and should be more akin to the typical point and shoot camera in terms of image quality. Still, that should yield better results than any smartphone that you would connect to it.
The QX10 retails for $250 and will also be shipping later in September. You can find the QX10 here at B&H Photo.
