Nikon has press conferences scheduled this week, which likely means some new camera announcements and the most likely camera being tossed around right now is a replacement for the Nikon D7000. Rumored specs on the new camera include a 24MP sensor, ISO 100-6400 and a form factor similar to its full frame brother – the D600.
Other rumors point to the possibility of a advanced Nikon Coolpix point and shoot camera – perhaps a Nikon P310 replacement that supports RAW image capture and WU-1a support for wireless image transfer. Or, a point and shoot with a 1″ sensor that would presumably compete head-to-head with the Sony RX100.
Whatever is coming, we should have official word and complete details in the next couple of days. Stay tuned.

I wonder what Nikon will do with this camera. With the D600 gaining up many of the features the D7000 had with a full frame sensor, it is difficult to see where Nikon will go with this. The Canon 7D seems to gear more towards sports/wildlife and I can see the direction of the 7D2 going even more that way. The D7000 never had as clear of a direction of strength and the same is true of the D600.

I don’t see a high end APS-C as direct competition with a lower (or indeed any) spec full frame. They each have their own niche and there is every reason to have one (or several) of each in your kit. In many ways (as an owner of both) I find the APS-C a more versatile format. For me the 5D mk II full frame for example is far better in the studio or for wide angle shots, that leaves a heck of a lot of scope for the 7D. I am intrigued to see what the Nikon will offer.
