Nikon Rumors uncovered an interesting little tidbit regarding the dealer pricing of the Nikon D800 in the US.
The D800 that your dealer sells to you for $3000 cost the dealer $2700, while the D800E sells for $3300 and cost the dealer $2970 – a markup of 11% and 10%, respectively. Accessories, however, are a different ball game altogether…

Wow, that isn’t very much of a mark-up. Less than I would have thought. Very tight margins and pricing will then be very consistent across retailers.

Assuming that the sheet is real, the next question is whether Nikon provides discounts on multiple camera orders, or whether they provide payments to dealers based on sales like car dealers where even though you might see only a $300 markup the reality is the manufacturer refunds a portion of the price paid based on sales.

Good point, Yirmin. It is a mistake to assume that a reseller’s only profit comes from the initial mark up on a piece of gear. It is common to have other incentives in play as well. Having said that, I remember B&H’s Henry Posner commenting once on a forum that readers would be surprised at how small the mark up actually was on cameras and lenses.

I find it interesting to see that BOTH the D800 and the D800E cameras will include the NX2 software. Rumor had it that the software would only be included with the D800E.
