Nikon D4

It looks like both the Nikon D4 and D800 may be just around the corner.  Nikon Rumors picked up word that the full frame Nikon D4 would show up in January at or around PMA/CES 2012.

Nikon Rumors cites a high level of confidence for a 16.2MP shooter that can capture 11 fps and will use the recently announced XQD memory cards.

Nikon D4 Rumored Specs

  • 16.2 MP
  • 11 fps
  • 100-102,400 ISO (exp. to ISO 50 and ISO 204,800)
  • CF and XQD card slots
  • Compatible with new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
  • Integrated ethernet
  • Face detection/recognition
  • Improved video
  • Uncompressed video out via HDMI
  • Smooth aperture control during video capture
  • Improved 51 AF points
  • AF detection range down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
  • 9 cross-type AF sensors – operational up to f/8

Lots of questions about the camera still; however, should these turn out to be the real deal, the Nikon D4 looks to be a direct response to Canon’s recently-introduced EOS 1D X.  The AF operation at f/8 is sure to stir the forums and may be enough to sway the frustrated birders out there if the AF speed at f/8 is up to snuff.

Additionally, Nikon has lagged behind on video features thus far in the HDSLR race, so it will be interesting to see if this new flagship steps it up in that department as well and matches up to the seriously upgraded video features in the 1D X.

Topaz Lens Effects

Topaz Labs has a special deal on its Lens Effects Photoshop plug-in.  It usually runs $79.99, but is available for $29.99 with the coupon code “simplefocus” from now until Dec. 24.

For those unfamiliar with the plug-in, Lens Effects allows you to apply depth of field effects and other effects to your images during post processing.  Lens Effects uses a depth map for fine tuning out of focus areas, which helps make the depth of field look more natural and optical-based.

Check it out here on Topaz’s website.

XQD Memory Card

The CompactFlash Association announced a new XQD standard for CF cards.  The new standard is based on the PCIe standard and should offer 125MB/s data transfer speeds out of the gate – with much faster possibilities later down the line.

Speed isn’t the only thing that has changed though.  The XQD cards (I’m guessing that’s what we’ll call them… but couldn’t we have stuck to only 2 letters?) are a completely different physical format, which means they won’t work in any current camera. [click to continue…]
