July 2010

MOO is offering 30% off printed products through midnight tomorrow (7/15).  In case you didn’t already know, I’m a big fan of Moo cards.  I’ve tried the standard business cards and the cool mini cards, and really dig them both.  And, since I had “Order Business Cards” on my calender for this week, I’ll be jumping on this one too.

No special code is needed.  Just head on over to MOO.com and place your order before the promo expires.

Update: I realized after posting the above that business cards aren’t on the main page for the general public, but MOO’s newsletter subscribers do get a 30% discount on business cards as well.  So, head over there and subscribe to their newsletter on the home page.  That should get you a link to the business card discounts as well.

Sony NEX-VG10 Camcorder

by on July 14, 2010

in Sony

The Sony NEX-VG10 is an interchangeable lens, APS-C format camcorder.  It is the first of its kind.

The VG10 gets the NEX prefix from the lens mount, which accepts Sony’s E-mount lenses like those released with the NEX-3 and NEX-5 mirrorless cameras.  The VG10 will also accept Alpha mount lenses from Sony’s DSLR line with the use of an appropriate lens adapter.

The NEX-VG10 captures 1920 x 1080/60i resolution video in AVCHD format at up to 24Mbps.  An array of four microphones at the front of the carry handle captures audio with front-side directivity and stereo separation.  In addition to capturing video, the VG10 captures 14MP still images in a very similar manner to the NEX-5.

The NEX-VG10 will be packaged with a Sony 18-200mm E-mount lens, which will provide a field of view equivalent to 27-300mm for full frame cameras.  Also included in the box will be a free license for Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 via download, which will enable you to work with the VG10′s files and even publish content to Blu-ray discs in full HD.

The NEX-VG10 carries an initial retail price of $2000 and should ship in September.   You can already pre-order the NEX-VG10 direct from Sony Style.

Check availability on B&H Photo, Adorama and Amazon.com.

Update: See a more in-depth overview at Tech Tilt: Sony NEX-VG10 Overview.

One of the frequently recurring questions that I receive is “What flash should I get for the Fuji HS10?”

The Fuji HS10 features a hot shoe for an external flash; however, Fuji does not make a dedicated flash for the camera.  Perhaps Fuji should think hard about making a flash for the next version of this camera.

I have inquired directly with Fuji regarding recommended external flashes, only to receive rather vague responses as to which flash models are appropriate for the HS10.  As a result of testing, obtaining recommendations from manufacturers and corresponding with HS10 users, I’ve compiled a short list of recommended external flashes for the Fuji HS10. The F80EXR is Fuji’s followup to the popular F70EXR, and is a 12-megapixel point and shoot camera with a 10x optical zoom.  The compact size and long reach of the F80EXR makes it a potentially attractive pocket camera.

Last week, RED’s Jim Jannard provided an update to the EPIC’s serious firmware “bug issues” that had adversely affected the production schedule of the ambitious RED ONE followup.  The bug has been killed and the production of the EPIC appears to be back on track. [click to continue…]
