The Fuji HS10 is the most recent superzoom camera that I’ve had my hands on (after the Nikon P100 and Olympus SP-800UZ). Since it will be a while before I complete my review of the Fuji HS10, I wanted to pass along some sample images from the HS10 at various settings.
All images were captured in JPEG format (although I shot in RAW + JPEG, I have not edited the RAW files yet). I have noted the basic shot info below each image, including the approximate 35mm format equivalent focal lengths. Feel free to download any of these sample images for your personal inspection (not for republication). You can get the original files by right-clicking on any of the images and choosing “Save link as…”
24mm – ISO 100 – f/5.6 – 1/450s
720mm – ISO 100 – f/6.4 – 1/600s
Autostitch Panoramic – ISO 100 – f/5 – 1/500 (while panning)
Chrome Film Style – 24mm – ISO 100 – f/5 – 1/400s
35mm – ISO 100 – f/3.6 – 1/180s
200mm – ISO 800 – f/5 – 1/280s
Chrome Film Style – 90mm – ISO 200 – f/4 – 1/110s
60mm – ISO 200 – f/3.6 – 1/80s
720mm – ISO 1600 – f/5.6 – 1/160s
720mm – ISO 1600 – f/5.6 – 1/125s
65mm – ISO 100 – f/3.6 – 1/60s
132mm – ISO 400 – f/4.5 – 1/6s (pretty impressive image stabilization at this shutter speed)
187mm – ISO 1600 – f/5 – 1/56s
Studio flash triggered via wireless hotshoe transmitter (in Manual exposure mode) – 187mm – ISO 100 – f/8 – 1/125s
That’s all for now. Stay tuned for the full review of the Fuji HS10, which should be coming along soon. If you are looking at superzoom cameras, don’t miss the Olympus SP-800UZ Review and Nikon P100 Review.

Hi Eric – Thanks for the sample pix. With yours and those of Jackie Lee’s I have been convinced into buying the HS10. I appreciate you have not done a full review yet, but it was your hands-on that set me on the road to buying one.
Can you answer me 1 question though? As an experienced photographer I am sure you set camera values yourself, but when you do your full review could you include samples which have been taken on full auto, SRauto and P A S M modes so that I get some idea of the quality I can expect. I know this is a big request because you will want to keep your article concise and to the point.
Thanks again for some great samples. Fuji should give you what we call in England a ‘backhander’ as you have sold at least one of their new HS10 s for them

Thanks for these sample images!
I can hardly wait for the review, cause I am torn between the hs10 en the Nikon p100 and have to make a decision soon if I want to take the new camera with me on holiday..
I don’t need raw or hotshoe and like the “feel” of the Nikon, but rumour has it the Fuji really delivers on image quality; samples around the internet made me like the colours, but left me in doubt about the rest.
Your reviews are to the point and userfriendly. Also you will probably be the first to review all three new megazooms. Yep, you are probably going to cast the deciding vote for me.. No pressure ;-)

i just got this camera just 3 days ago, and im enjoying it. I even check and see the color accuracy against 550d and surprisingly find it on par, iso is very good till iso800, 1600 even is usueable from a 1/2.33 sensor. im glad they solved the CA problems which haunt the s100fs
Timothy Lunn says
I have the s100fs and just got given a Sony 330 dslr with extra 200mm lens. I really enjoyed the convenience of a built in 400mm zoom lens of the Fugi. I will have to spend well over 800.00 to get an equivalent lens. So I was thinking of spending less and buying the new hs10 with a built in 720. What is the CA problem mentioned by Grabejud?

Also how is the quality of the full zoom v.s. 400mm in a DSLR lens?
Thanks a lot I am enjoying the information posted.

Thank you for the sample photos. This camera looks great!I will waiting after the full review for the HS10.
My only question to you is about video mode:
As you know a lot of camera make some noise when we do a little movie and this in annoying. This is especially true when you try to zoom on a subject.
Is with the HS10 of Fuji we encounter the same kind of problem?
Thank you for your answer and this website.
Eric Reagan says
@Cedric – Because the zoom moves by manually rotating the zoom ring on the lens barrel, you don’t deal with the noisy zoom motors; however, it’s harder to make it zoom as smooth as, say, the Nikon P100.

Hi Eric,
I am impressed by your samples. I now have the Eos 40d with lenses, in short the havy bulk. Now I have ordered the HS10, and I am looking forward to take my first pictures. I don’t care for the movie posibility. On Setve’s the have diffulculties with that. Since I am ‘n photographer, for me iys the sensor, lens and processor and with the Fujilfilm finepix HS10 I think this will be all right. Many thanks and greetz from Holland, Ivo

Hi Cedric,
I am trying out the HS10 right now. I am happy with the images I have gotten.
I consider myself a hobbyist in photography. I choose to try the HS10 because I wanted the ability to take some video also. Doing video with the HS10 is a challenge. The manual zoom is almost impossible to work smoothly. The microphone picks up all sorts of noise when the focus and aperture are adjusting. Every time you handle the zoom there is a lot of noise. So while I like the other aspects of this camera, I will be returning it because of completely unsatisfactory video performance.

Hi, Do hs 10 has both manual ring type zooming and other type?or only ring type?
tony says
I BOUGHT ONE OF THESE AND WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE IMAGE QUALITY. THE SHOTS LOOKED GOOD UNTIL YOU ZOOMED IN TO 100%. THEN THE OUTLINES WERE FUZZY AND LEAVES AND BUSHES TURNED TO BLOBS OF COLOUR. I RANG FUJI AUS WITH NO JOY, UNTIL TODAY(NEARLY 2 WEEKS LATER) WHEN THEY SAID THEY HAD A FIRMWARE UPDATE. UNFORTUNATELY I SOLD THE CAMERA IN THE MEANTIME. I’VE ALSO GOT THE S200EXR WHICH AFTER 4 MONTHS BROKE DOWN AND THE IMAGE QUALITY DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH THE S100FS. I DONT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING AT FUJI. I’VE HAD THEIR CAMERAS FOR YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT THE LAST 2 MODELS SEEM TO HAVE GONE DOWN HILL. WHEN A LITTLE POINT AND SHOOT LIKE 70EXR CAN OUT PERFORM THE S200EXR THERE IS DEFINATELY SOMETHING WRONG.
Peter says
Hi Tony. I’m sorry that you experienced problems with the HS10. As you can see from the first post on this page, I bought Hs10 a couple of weeks ago based on Eric’s hands-on and samples. I am very pleased with my purchase. I chose to set the image quality to fine instead of normal. Ok so now I can only take 1500 shots on my 8gb card instead of 3500 !!! Heck, the difference in quality is worth it. I have zoomed into 300% with very little loss of quality or sharpness. The colours are quite vivid as the camera tries to emulate the provia film stock and this doesn’t suit everybody’s taste, especially where foliage is concerned. Fuji actually mention in the full manual that the camera may have focus problems when photographing foliage, and depth of field plays a part too. I may be just an ignorant amateur, but the Hs10 does it for me and the difference in weight between it and my Canon 400D + battery pack + a superzoom lens when I’m on holiday will be another big plus.

Eric,
In your review, you had one photo using a “Studio flash triggered via wireless hotshoe transmitter (in Manual exposure mode)”. In another review of the HS10, you had some info about the hot shoe. Do you have additional info on the hot shoe?

I looked carefully at the sample images and read the user comments.
Does no one use wide angle?
Under about 40mm eq the camera does not produce usable images.

Has anyone taken indoor swimming pool shots?
I am interested in sample photos of HS10 in darkish (poolside) conditions.
I am not intreseted, very much in cropping, just zoom and shoot at 10fps and choose a photo. Or use the pro mode of HS10.
If any one can help it would finalise the deal.

The HS10 or the S1800 are my choices. I am an amateur and am using a Fuji F50 with 12 MP and a 3 power zoom. Either of the two will be a drastic improvement for me. I take pics of my grandkids and publish them on my web page ( non-commercial) for the team families and kids to see. I like action shots and as you can see from the web pages, The F50 did not do too awful bad. At night under lights, the F50 was very slow and did not take good pics. I am hoping the S1800 or the HS10 will do better. Look at http://www.jerrylipski.com for the sports shots of the kids.

Is possible to use some intervalometer or timer with this Fuji HS10?? i want to play with time-lapses.
thanx friends.

Some HS10s did have initial problems with a premature “low battery” warning indicator, some image resolving problems, etc.,all probably down to faulty software,as Fuji have issued firmware updates to try and resolve these problems.
If the software update doesn’t do it,then Fuji UK will quite happily look at these problems for you, under their warranty.
Speak to the Fuji helpdesk, and they will advise you.
There are many Fuji HS10 owners out there, who have been very satisfied with their state-of-the art cameras, but Fuji are aware of problems with some HS10s,probably due to poor quality control,or due to rushing the camera out without ironing out any “bugs” first, who knows?
It is not really acceptable in my view,to have a camera on sale, unless it fully up to the job, especially as it could cost you nearly £400 with some dealers.
If your HS10 is as it should be,it is an excellent camera, and capable of some excellent prints, but you need to take time to fully appreciate it’s capabilities.
If you want better quality in your pictures,(if you only view them on-screen,don’t bother!)go for a mid-range DSLR,but it will cost you, especially if you buy a couple of lenses to match the Fuji.
And don’t forget the extra WEIGHT!
PS
Fuji UK will supply a “proper” Users Manual, free, for your HS10,just ring them up!

I took the HS10 a month ago and got some execellent shots with it. Earlier i wanted to go in for an DSLR but was put off by the cost, specially since i need a long zoom for by birding hobby. Anyone interested in sample images can check out my site http://www.irwinslens.webs.com.

Hi. In what mode and how is the AE/AF lock button used on the HS10. I tried this but nothing happens.
dr surf says
Can you include the distances to the subject in the long range shots? The zoom distance in mm is good, but without knowing how far in feet or yards or meters to the subject, it’s tough to compare with other cameras. I have the S100, for example; I’ve taken a series of shots in which the distances were known either through range-finder or through physical measurement (luckily, in my neighborhood each city block is exactly 400 ft., which makes it easy).
Thanks,
DR

Hi and thanks for the review. I have had an hs10 for about 4 months now. 5 Days ago I obtained the new Canon SX30is and set out with great anticipation to try the 35X zoom feature. After about 150 photos with it and also with many comparison photos versus the HS10, the Canon will be returned today. I think that in many reviews there seems to be a Canon bias.I also believe that the Fuji is the most underrated Ultra zoom on the market. The clarity and sharpness of the HS10 at full telephoto was sharp and clear and the colors were outstanding. At the same and at the same telephoto range the Canon images were dull and not sharp like the Fuji. The Fuji with Tcon 17 lens attached and at much greater zoom lengths far surpassed the Canon Images in quality and sharpness. If one takes the time to learn the Fuji you will be greatly surprised. Take a look at this site of Jackie Lee’s reviews and photos taken with the HS10 http://www.pbase.com/middlehill/fujifilm_finepix_hs10_review&page=all
