@Sky – I talked to Pentax reps at PMA 2010 about the 645D, and they told me that they weren’t getting release info on the 645D other than what was being teased on Pentax’s Japan site. Additionally, they confirmed that it would not be coming to the US – at least initially.

As we talked about the 645D, the problem with bringing a medium format camera like the 645D to the US market is that it is a very niche camera. Sure, some will sell, but how many? Will the expenses of marketing and distributing the camera in the US outweigh the income it generates? Will it be significant?

Here’s the thing though, it’s not necessarily dead in the water for US photographers. The vibe that I walked away with from Pentax’s US reps was that we will just have to wait and see. And, if the demand looks like it’s there, then it’s not out of the question that we could see it on US soil at a later date. Now that the price point has been announced, I think we’ve got a very attractive entry into the medium format realm on our hands. I think that Pentax USA has some work to do in determining whether a US launch of the 645D is a viable option.

645 won’t be available in US.
It wasn’t announced on Pentax US site, and P. representative told that they don’t plan expansion on US market with this camera.

Looks like we all were screwed.

The announcement of the Pentax 645D is truly a remarkable medium format camera, 40 megapixels, beautiful ergonomic design and size for under $10,000. I was lusting after Hasselblad digital but at twice the price plus of the Pentax. For professional photographers this camera is now within in reach to step up to medium format. This has to have sent shockwaves throughout the pro marketplace. Now how to I get easy monthly payments?

And mounted on this camera we see the all new smc D FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW lens.
Wow, looks promising. But I guess that all my FA lenses will give me a crop factor.
I hoped for a fullFrame 645D with CMOS…….
