Thank you so much for putting the time in writing this article. I currently have a Canon 20D. I love it. I thought about stepping up to the 50D, but wanted a full frame. The $2600 price tag on the full frame 5D is a bit steep for me. When I looked at the 7D and was reading the specs, I was sold. The focal points, the mega pix, the video, live view, the ISO range and so on made it a done deal. I'm not on a professional level but I'm working on it. I just purchased a set of studio lights and convinced my wife that I need a new camera. LOL... I hope to have it by my birthday in March. Anyway, thanks again.

Great review, thanks!

Yet, I totally disagree with your downplaying of the importance of the continuous autofocus in video mode. It's an absolutely critical feature and the lack thereof renders the camera's video mode completely useless. The reason being not just my reluctance to manually focus during the shooting, but the physical impossibility of simultaneously playing with the lens's focal distance (zoom) and adjusting the focus with the same hand (at least, with the anatomy of an average human being).

In a camcorder where you change the zoom with your right hand's fingertips while your left hand is free, the need to manually focus would have been less of an issue. With the 7D, though, it is technically impossible to gradually zoom in or out and stay in focus and this is simply unacceptable!

I do agree with Ben Fienieg that it's unrealistic to expect a DSLR to completely replace a dedicated camcorder, and this is exactly why I have recently bought both Sony CX520 and Canon 7D. Yet, I do believe that a certain percentage of the money I've spent on 7D has paid for the video feature and I have hard time accepting the fact that this part of the investment has gone down the drain. The lack of some super sofisticated feature would have been fine by me, but here we're talking about the most basic video feature, an absolute must found even in the cheapest and most primitive video cameras. What a shame!

P.S. Let this not give you an impression that I'm not happy with my 7D. I absolutely love it, it's an incredible stills camera! It's just that with the current crippled video spec Canon shouldn't have even mentioned having a video capability in this camera.

Hi guys, am I the crazy dutchman? I just do not understand all the discussion about video possibilities for a phota camera. If I really want to shoot a video then I will get myself a video camera.
For photography I would much rather see Canon put in a full frame sensor and leave out the video thing. To me it is synomous to the crazy pixels race, which I must say seems to be less of a topic.

Regards,
Ben Fienieg

@zulu

Nikon D300s was introduced july 30, 2009 (basically beginning of august). Canon 7d was introduced sept 1 2009.

The D300s is NOT near the end of it's lifecycle. Double check the press releases.

The cameras were introduced just over a month apart.

For the past three mid range models, canon has waited exactly a year between models. I held off on the 50d knowing the 7d would come out in september of this year based on their cycles.

Neither Canon nor Nikon are definitively ahead. I assume both of them will have updates for their full frame lines sometime in the first half of the new year (successors to the d3x, d700, 5d mark ii, and 1Ds). As usual, they will all be fantastic cameras. As usual, canon and nikon freaks will moan about which is better.

I own both 5d mark II and the 7d. Call me crazy, but I love the focus system of the 5d mk II more. I also love the 5d mk ii more in general. over all the 5d is used when I need picture quality, or doing studio work. the 7d is used more for sport coverage and when I need to shoot motion.

The D300s is at the end of its lifecyle, whereas the 7D is new and not going to be refreshed for at least a year and a half. It is a step in the right direction, but Canon is still clearly lagging behind its bigger brother, Nikon. Witness the 1D MkIV vs the D3s. Canon stubbornly sticking to a APS-H sensor, achieving what appears to be poorer ISO performance than the Nikon, and besting only in fps and video. Meanwhile a D800 will be out in early 2010 and a D4 in early 2011. Canon had an early lead and dropped the ball. Sorry guys.

What a great review! I'm looking to upgrade from my Xsi and after reading this review you might have sold me on the 7D! I really wish it was a full frame camera though.

@Rob Knight - Yeah, the D300s and D700 have a great AF system. Hopefully, Canon will come around for the 5D Mark III in a couple of years...

@everyone - Thanks for the fact check guys. I don't know what I was thinking. I've updated the reference to Nikon CLS to note that the D5000 doesn't include a Commander mode (rather than the D90).
