Thanks! We just purchased this in Feb 2010 and while dissapointed in the lack of video capabilities, the shutter speed is an upgrade from the point and shoot Canon we've owned for years.

@Andi - I think the A330 is a perfectly capable camera for beginners.

@Blessing - I think both will do the job fine. I think it mainly depends on your preferences. If you are ok looking through the viewfinder, then I'd go with the D5000. If you want the live view like a point and shoot camera, the A330 is a no brainer.

I don't think either camera would be a "bad" choice for capturing family moments. If you were wanting to "get serious" and maybe move into a semi-pro realm, I would lean toward the Nikon, but given the choice of a family camera, the A330's fast Live View sure is attractive. Again, no "wrong" choice here.

Holly, I think a great combo for capturing kids in the price range of the A230 and D60 is the Canon Rebel XSi with the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens.

The reason that I point you toward the Canon is because the 50mm lens is a more affordable lens than what Sony and Nikon offer at that focal length. Otherwise, I think the A230 and D60 would be great options - and I would give the edge to the D60. Bear in mind though that Nikon's 50mm f/1.8 lens doesn't autofocus on the D60. As a result, you would have to spend more on the 50mm Nikon lens to get autofocus.

Why do I like the 50mm lens for kids? Look at these links:

I like the 50mm f/1.8. Great low light and great focal length for candids of the kids.
