Nikon Coolpix S630 Review at Buy-n-Shoot

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Buy-n-Shoot has posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix S630.

While the Coolpix S630 is a well-designed compact camera with a positively minimal feel about it, it is probably best suited to photography novices who prefer to be able to point-and-shoot regularly and trust that they will receive basic and consistent results across a variety of shooting situations.

Sony Officially Announces 3 New Alpha DSLRs

May 17, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony has finally officially unveiled its new entry-level DSLRs, the A230, A330 and A380.  The Sony A230 and A330 feature 10.2 megapixel sensors, while the A380 features a 14.2 megapixel sensor.  The A330 and A380 both feature the popular quick autofocus Live View system that made the A300 and A350 so popular, along with the tilting LCD.

The new DSLRs appear to be refreshed versions of their respective predecessors, the A200, A300 and A350.  Sony is promoting the reduction in weight and size as an advantage of the new models.  While I’ll gladly welcome a reduction in weight, I think the size of the prior models was just about right. (See PB’s Sony A350 Review) We’ll see if the change in size adversely affects the handling.

The cameras will be available for pre-order beginning on May 18th.  The will come in kit form with an 18-55mm lens.  The Sony A230 kit carries an MSRP of $550.  The A330 and A380 come in at $650 and $850, respectively.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Canon Issues Service Notice for EOS-1D Mark III & EOS-1Ds Mark III

May 16, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has issued a service notice for its two flagship pro cameras, the 1D Mark III and the 1Ds Mark III.  The service notice relates to excess oil used to lube moving parts inside the mirror box.  Unfortunately, if too much oil is applied during the manufacturing of the cameras, it can lead to spots on the sensor.  Canon is offering to clean the mirror box of affected cameras free of charge.

We offer our most sincere apologies to customers using these products who have been inconvenienced by this issue. Going forward, we will spare no effort in our quality management to make sure our customers can use our products with confidence. We hope our efforts will earn your understanding.

More details are available on Canon’s service notice page.

Canon EOS 500D Review at PhotographyBLOG

May 16, 2009 By Eric Reagan

PhotographyBLOG has posted a review of the Canon EOS 500D (aka Rebel T1i).

The new 15 megapixel CMOS sensor and expanded ISO range thankfully haven’t compromised image quality in any way, quite the opposite in fact.

Nikon D90 Review at Buy-n-Shoot

May 16, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Buy-n-Shoot has posted a review of the Nikon D90.

The D90 is a genuinely well-crafted DSLR from Nikon that covers all of the bases that a mid-range unit should, as well as providing a host of additional features and controls that are well and truly pushing the D90 towards semi-professional territory.

Pentax K-7 Reviews and Resources

May 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The Pentax K-7 is a 14.6 megapixel DSLR, which features HD video capturing capabilities and a unique HDR mode, which produces one composite image from a series of 3 bracketed exposures.

The K-7 is a crop-sensor camera, which means it produces an angle of view of 1.5x the focal length of lenses as compared to a 35mm or full frame camera.  For example, a 300mm lens has the appearance of a 450mm lens as a result of the “crop factor”.
