Just as a follow up, if anyone read this and wanted to know what the final layout looked like in detail, but didn't want to pick up a paper copy, the online version is now hosted here:

http://digitaledition.qwinc.com/publication/?i=12472

Just click-through the cover page to the story (the magazine is working on a pretty sweet online format if you ask me).

For the magazine use, we submitted a request here:
http://services.google.com/permissions/application

Further, given that the article amounted to a free ad for Google Earth, we didn't figure they'd be likely to complain. For a textbook, however, I would definitely secure full permission before using anything they created or owned.

Thanks for the comment,
Zach

When I was a photo editor for geography text books, I regularly used to get requests for Google Earth like imagery. Hard to get the real stuff, because of Google's terms of use. So, really interesting option, this. My one hesitation for this solution would be: wouldn't using the icons also infringe on Google's copyright? Dunno really, just wondering...

Interesting write-up however!

That's a fair point, Christian. Working as I usually do in the Adobe Fireworks format, I forget that PNGs are not typically considered vector graphics. However, within Fireworks, the program's meta data allows for infinitely-resizable vector graphics, especially if they are drawn in Fireworks itself. This link will explain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics#Bitmap_graphics_editor_support_for_PNG

However, I think you're probably right with respect to the Google graphics being raster images.

Thanks for the comment,

As far as I know, PNG files are lossless compressed bitmaps, not vector files. I use PNG frequently when I'm unsure wether I have to re-edit an image. JPG in this case would lead to recompression and additional detail loss.
