What is the problem ? If you are knee deep in DX lenses and cannot afford a D700 buy a D300 and be happy as freelancer ! D'ont worry about Nikons D 700-sales, this camera will be a winner ! A cheap Nikon - FX camera ? To kill DX -Format and DX-sales ?

Greetings

Unfortunately, the camera that this really most resembles is the 5D, which is about 2/3rds as expensive.

I think Nikon dropped the ball here. I think this camera shows them to be substantially behind Canon's design curve.

Here's the deal; if Nikon had released this camera as a loss-leader at $2000, they would have probably been selling it at no profit. But, they would have put it in the hands of exponentially more newspapers, pro-sumers, and freelance journalists. $3k is a lot to bite off for the average freelancer. A lot.

Why should Nikon have made this camera a loss leader? Why, to sell FX lenses, of course! Practically every newspaper and freelancer in the country on the Nikon system already has a complete stable of DX lenses. Those lenses are functionally useless on this camera; the size loss brings us right back to the days of the D70 in terms of print size at 300 dpi. In typical magazine photography the D70 could handle one vertical page but not two (no double-truck images). Thus, everyone who buys the D700 *will be buying FX lenses to complement it.*

Nikon is on a tilt/shift kick right now, which I predicted some time ago. As we get into the realm of medium-format quality photography in "affordable" digital bodies, landscape and catalog photographers are going to be demanding tilt/shift controls to make the final switch. (Those guys are still the last bastion of film).

Eventually I think Nikon releases a D400 in FX format at 12 megapixels, probably in around 2009. Again, that's to drive sales of FX lenses more than anything. Probably they just couldn't afford the losses that they would incur in selling the D700 in a "D300" price range right now. But eventually they need to.

Because this camera is almost an analogue to a body Canon has had on the market since 2005, which has already gone through a downward price revision, Nikon really needs to finish playing catch-up. I love the Nikon system. Their ergonomics, and flash system is superior to Canon's. But as of right now their prices are--demonstrably--no where close for a given camera body, and that has to be rectified.

Interesting that Nikon would release a camera this similar (unless I am missing something) to the D300. There is obviously one major difference in the FX sensor, so I guess that is one big step enough to release a higher priced body in between the D300/D3 area.

I would love to have a D300 and the D700 but since I just bought the D300 last week I guess I am stuck.
