The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens is a high-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens combining light weight and compactness with an f/4 maximum aperture. Inner focusing and the ring USM enable quick and quiet autofocusing. Also, a circular polarizing filter can be attached and used without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. The tripod collar (sold separately) is the same one used with the EF 300mm f/4L USM. (Canon)

Results from the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens will make you smile when reviewing at 100% on a monitor. This lens is very sharp wide open and improves only slightly when stopped down – and primarily in the corners at the wide end of the focal length range.

Give this baby good light and you’ll keep almost every picture. The sharpness/colour/contrast coupled with the lens’s AF speed and accuracy make this one of Canon’s best pro-sumer lenses ever. The bokeh is so creamy and the clarity & colour so vivid the subject just pops out of the picture so easily. Get the 1.4 extender and it’s an even better outdoor lens.
This is an ideal lens for daytime sports because you don’t need IS (Image Stabilization) or the f/2.8 speed of Canon’s other 70-200mm lenses, and this one retains the super-fast focusing and excellent image quality you do need.
One of Canon’s lowest priced “L” series lenses. Optically excellent, probably as good as the 70-200/2.8. A stop slower of course, but then you do save about $700, so that’s not a bad trade off.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L is a very harmonic package combining exceptional build quality with an excellent and very even optical performance throughout the range. Adding an EF 1.4x II only results is a slight loss of quality which is remarkable for such a slow speed zoom.

This is by far my favorite Lens. I’ve had this lens for a couple of years and am still amazed by the images that come out of it. This lens is extremely sharp even at F4. I’ve compared this lens to my new Canon 24-105 L, Canon 28-80L, Canon 100-300L, Tokina 300mm F4, and Canon 135 S/F. I found the 70-200 to be the sharpest and have the fastest Auto focus.
The EF70-200/4L is among Canon’s best lenses. If you need a lens that covers this range and can live without an f2.8 aperture and Image Stabilization, this is the one to get.
Where to Buy
First off, consider going to your local camera store (and I don’t necessarily mean Wolf Camera at the mall). By going to your local camera store, you’re supporting your community and you just might build a lasting relationship with people you can rely on when you need some help or answers. If you’re buying online, I recommend sticking with Amazon, B&H Photo or Adorama. These three vendors are reliable, trustworthy and generally have the best (legitimate) prices. Additionally, purchasing your gear through these links helps support this site.
